Dr. Kaili Shumilak

Dr. Kaili Shumilak earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences and went on to earn her medical degree from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in California. She completed her 3-year residency program and is an ABFM board-certified physician. She is a committed osteopath who has trained and continues to train in several different modalities.

Dr. Kaili understands the benefit of OMM (osteopathic manipulation medicine) as part of a person's health team. OMM consists of hands-on treatment to detect subtle changes or restrictions, using a variety of techniques, often working with fascia and other structures to help augment the body's natural health resources and mobility. Most often she uses a gentle approach to treatments, with occasional incorporation of direct techniques.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a holistic approach to patient care involving hands-on diagnosis and treatment. Founded by A.T. Still in the 1800s, it is the oldest form of practiced modern manual therapy originating in the United States. In the U.S., Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs), like MDs, attend 4-year medical schools, complete residencies, become board-certified in all medical specialties, and are accredited by the same Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education as MD residencies. Both DOs and MDs are granted the full scope of medical practice, including diagnosing all diseases, prescribing drugs, and performing surgery. During medical school, all Osteopathic Physicians receive training in Osteopathic Philosophy and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) - this is something that makes DOs unique from MDs. Some Osteopathic physicians specialize, completing residency training in OMM (also known as neuromuscular medicine), while others complete postgraduate trainings.

Core Osteopathic Principles

The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.
The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.
